Thanks be to God that not everyone has had to do with it. It’s true that sometimes there is some truth behind, but unfortunately or fortunately – depends how you see it – it’s not always the case.
The Rumour Mill does not need fuel to run it, all it needs is an idle mind, and a mouth that would have done better to stay shut. Only thing is mouths don’t ever know when to stay shut and when to open. Mostly they’ll open to say – no, not sensible things! – but rather nonsense. Lots and lots of nonsense! And those who could have said good things, who could have spurted out good ideas, they don’t. And that’s why our world is where it is.
Too many people talking to say nothing.
And too many people not saying anything.
But – yes there’s a “but”! Silence is GOLDEN right! So, perhaps they’re not all wrong those non-talking people!
The thing with a rumour is that it can damage someone a bit, not at all, or it can destroy someone completely. It can destroy his chances at school, at a job, at a marriage, at anything.
How they start, most of the time we don’t know. From whom they come, how they cooked it up, why they made it up… Did they hear something and misinterpret? All we’re sure about is that there are many, many gossipmongers in this world. But, fishmongers sell fish and get money. What do those gossipmongers get?? If only a sadistic pleasure in having cut someone’s reputation to pieces.
So, better think twice, even a hundredth times before saying something about someone. Be sure of what you’re saying. In any case, why even say things about someone else that’s not really good – because rumors are mostly not good. Keep it to yourself. It’s much safer. For you. And the person.
